God invites us to become his children. He calls us to set out on the way, to leave the self-containment of our desires and interests, in order to go out and meet him and adore him. God restores meaning to our life; he himself is ‘the way, and the truth, and the life’ (Jn 14:6).

The noonday devil is the demon of acedia, the vice also known as sloth. However, acedia is not laziness; in fact it can manifest as busyness or activism. Rather, acedia is a gloomy combination of weariness, sadness, and a lack of purposefulness. Abbot Nault says that acedia is the most oppressive of demons.
